A Budapest Duo Improvise Their Way to a Compact Piece About Waiting

Begin with the room, because the duo begin there too. Weekend Vikings is two people in Budapest: Gábor Szunyogh on keyboards and Viktor Szathmáry on drums. They hold down jobs and families during the week, and on Saturdays they sit down in a rehearsal room with their instruments. Every piece they release starts as a free jam in that space, and 3body is no exception.

Weekend Vikings keep a run of coverage across these titles, collected on the duo’s artist profile, and their music sits in the playlist below. 3body came here through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Put it on before the rest.

How Weekend Vikings Shape a Take

The track went out as a single on 10 September 2025. It was later collected on Sparks!, the nine-track debut album that followed on 8 November 2025. It runs three minutes and fifty-seven seconds, which for a keys-and-drums improvising duo is short.

The duo have described the working method plainly, and it explains the length. Speaking to The Interviewist, Szunyogh said the songs are always born out of improvisation, from free jam sessions. As the pianist, he would naturally throw in far more improvised passages. Szathmáry, the drummer, pulls him back. The result, in Szunyogh’s own words, is compositions that are both expressive and quite compact.

That is a craft description rather than a personality one. A duo has no bass and no horn to hand a chorus to. Every structural decision falls to two players who are also the arrangers. One of them wants to open the form. The other wants to close it. What reaches the record is the settlement between them. Nothing here runs long enough to lose its thread.

What the Weekend Vikings Room Leaves Audible

The space matters to the recording as much as to the writing. A keyboard and a kit in a rehearsal room produce a specific balance. The drums carry the decay and the keys carry the harmony. The distance between them stays audible because nothing else occupies it.

Listen for what is not there. No pad fills the gaps. No third instrument covers a transition. When the piece moves, you hear two players deciding to move together. That is a different event from an arrangement moving on its own.

That exposure is the trade a duo makes. It removes the safety net an ensemble provides. In return, every entrance becomes a decision the listener can follow.

What 3body Is Waiting For

The piece takes its title and its shape from the science-fiction series 3 Body Problem. The duo have said they wanted the unsettling quality of the show, the feeling of waiting for something unknown. To get there they built the composition on jazz harmonies and a persistent sense of anticipation.

Anticipation is a structural instruction rather than a mood. A piece that has to keep a listener waiting cannot resolve early. The harmony therefore has to keep moving without arriving. That is the work the jazz vocabulary is doing. The chords supply forward motion and withhold the cadence. The drums hold the pulse steady, so the delay reads as tension instead of drift.

The Same Instinct Across the Catalogue

Pin Tweaks, released a few weeks after 3body, takes Angelo Badalamenti’s Falling from Twin Peaks and rebuilds it. The duo changed the rhythm, shifted the key, then deconstructed the sections and reassembled them. They added synth textures and a repeating figure they describe as sounding like a phone ringing. Their stated influences run the same way, towards the scores of the first Blade Runner and the Dune films. Picture and music carry the message together there.

The 2025 run shows how quickly the material accumulated. Foxheart in February, Charged and Better Second in March, Boundary days later, then Hungry Tulips in July, Marching Ants and Level Up in August, 3body in September, Suspended Summer later that month and Pin Tweaks at the end of October. Nine of those became Sparks!. That is a Saturday habit turned into a release schedule.

For listeners placing the record, the nearest shelf is piano-led jazz that thinks in pictures. GoGo Penguin is the closest reference for the method. That group arranges acoustic instruments with the logic of electronic music. BADBADNOTGOOD covers the crossover end. There, jazz players build pieces around a groove rather than a head-and-solos form. Portico Quartet is the reference for suspension, music written to hold a room. None of those comparisons make Weekend Vikings derivative. They locate the shelf.

The duo are candid about their scale. They are a two-person operation looking for international label partners. All their gear still fits in the back of one estate car. That is the context 3body came out of, and it is why the piece sounds like a decision rather than a production. Two players, one room, one Saturday, and a composition that ends before it outstays the tension it was built on.
