The Self-Produced Folk-Pop Battle Song Built From Crows, Seaweed and 150 Layered Voices

MIRIEL made Silenced alone in an old family house on an island in northern Norway. Released on 8 March 2024, the single is a dreamy folk-pop battle song. Tribal drums, field recordings and a bridge built from 150 takes of one voice carry it to its climax.

MIRIEL’s Silenced is in the playlist below, battle drums and island sounds included, and the wider coverage lives on MIRIEL’s artist profile. It came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Listen first, then read on for how the 150-voice bridge was made.

MIRIEL Built Silenced Around One Chant and a Lesson From a Seminar on Modern Slavery

Every part of Silenced points towards one line. In the bridge, a choir rises and chants “We won’t be silenced! Let’s raise our voices!” Everything before it is there to get the listener to that moment.

Above all, the words carry a specific idea. MIRIEL describes Silenced as a battle song for people who have no voice. Women around the world who go unheard inspired it. Fittingly, the release date of 8 March is International Women’s Day.

The spark came years earlier, at a seminar on modern slavery. There, MIRIEL learned that traffickers rarely use chains or handcuffs to control the people they exploit. Instead, they use threats against families, so victims stay silent and the harm goes on.

That is a dark starting point for a folk-pop song, and MIRIEL says so plainly. Even so, the hope behind the track is simple. People who have a voice should raise it for those who cannot. Many listeners know the fear of speaking up, which is why the chant works as an invitation rather than a lecture.

An Island House as the Studio

First, the room matters here. The house once belonged to MIRIEL’s great-grandmother, and it stands on an island in northern Norway. Towering mountains, a glacier, white beaches and cows surround it. MIRIEL, who is based in Bergen, wrote and produced the whole track there.

In addition, sounds from the island went straight into the recording. Crows, seaweed and a custom-built seagull synthesizer all sit in the mix. A careful listener may even catch crushed seaweed, stones and pepper. Those details are easy to miss on a first play, so Silenced rewards a second listen on good headphones.

Drums Borrowed From Film-Score War Music

The drums come from somewhere bigger than the island. MIRIEL drew on cinematic war music and war drums, the kind heard in The Lord of the Rings films. As a result, the tribal drums give Silenced its march. Against that weight, the acoustic elements and the dreamy vocal keep the song light enough for an indie pop playlist.

The Structure of Silenced, From Crows and Seaweed to a Bridge of 150 MIRIEL Voices

In short, the song works as a build. The tribal drums drive it forward, and the island sounds colour the spaces around the vocal. Then everything leads to the climax. At that point MIRIEL becomes an ensemble, with 150 recorded backing vocals stacked into one defiant choir. The aim was a sound like people from all over the world rising up together to sing the chant.

That bridge is the clearest example of the craft involved. Recording 150 takes as a single performer is slow, patient work. Still, it is what turns one voice into something that sounds like a crowd. MIRIEL also brings a background as a classical pianist into pop.

After the writing and production, Simon Bergseth mixed the single and Jan K. Hovland mastered it.

For instance, listeners who already love AURORA will hear a kindred approach. The Norwegian singer pairs dreamy folk-pop with pounding drums and chant-like hooks on songs such as Running With the Wolves. Fans of Enya will know the effect of one voice multitracked into a choir, here pushed to 150 layers. Meanwhile, anyone drawn to the small found sounds Björk folded into Vespertine will enjoy hearing crows and seaweed inside a pop song.

Overall, Silenced suits listeners who are discovering new independent artists, especially those who like their folk-pop to stand for something. Two and a half years after release, the single is finding a new audience on social media, where the island story and the chant keep travelling.

From the AcousticMusic.News Curator Team: “The 150-voice bridge is the obvious headline, but the island sounds are what stay with us. Crows, seaweed and a seagull synth give Silenced a sense of place that no rented studio could supply. They make the chant feel rooted in a real place.”

Stream Silenced on Spotify, Apple Music or Bandcamp, and watch the lyric video on YouTube.
