Body Size Sets the Low End
Acoustic guitar body shapes are frequently discussed in terms of history and playing comfort, but their acoustic consequences are direct and predictable enough to plan a recording around.
The body is an air resonator. A larger enclosed volume resonates at a lower frequency, so bigger guitars produce more low-frequency output and extend further down. A dreadnought has substantially more air inside it than a parlour guitar and sounds it.
That single relationship explains most of what people describe as the character of each shape. It is not mysticism about tonewood; it is the size of the box and where its main resonance sits.
Dreadnoughts Are Built for Volume and Fundamentals
The dreadnought’s deep body and broad waist produce a strong low-frequency response and considerable output. It was designed to be heard, and in an ensemble without amplification that was the requirement.
On a recording this reads as power and weight, which suits strummed accompaniment and flatpicked lead lines where the guitar is carrying rhythmic and harmonic duty. It sits confidently under a vocal without needing help.
The same strength is a liability in dense arrangements. A dreadnought’s low end occupies the same region as bass guitar and the lower half of a piano, and in a full mix it frequently has to be filtered heavily, at which point much of what makes it distinctive is removed.

Orchestra Models Trade Power for Balance
The orchestra model and its relatives use a smaller body with a narrower waist, which reduces low-frequency output and shifts the balance toward the midrange.
That is the reason they are so consistently favoured for fingerstyle. With less low-frequency energy dominating, individual voices in a contrapuntal arrangement stay separable, and the bass notes played by the thumb do not swamp the melody above them.
In a recording context this shape is easier to place in a mix, because it is not competing for the region where bass instruments live. It often needs less corrective equalisation than a larger guitar, simply because there is less to correct.
Parlour Guitars Are a Deliberate Narrow Voice
Small-bodied parlour guitars produce noticeably less low end and a pronounced midrange focus. Judged by a general-purpose standard they sound limited, which is exactly why they are useful.
On a recording that limitation reads as period character and as intimacy. The instrument occupies a narrow band, cuts through without effort, and layers with other guitars without the low-frequency collisions that stacking dreadnoughts produces.
They also respond well to close microphone positions, where proximity effect restores some of the weight the body does not provide, giving an engineer a genuine tonal control rather than a problem to manage.

Matching the Guitar to the Arrangement
The practical use of all this is casting. If the guitar is the only harmonic instrument, a larger body filling more of the spectrum is usually right. If it is one element among bass, keys and drums, a smaller body will need less removal.
For layered acoustic parts, using different body sizes for different layers is far more effective than recording the same guitar twice. The parts separate naturally because they occupy different regions, with no equalisation required.
This is a decision made before any microphone is chosen, and it has more effect on the finished sound than most decisions made afterwards. Changing guitar is a bigger tonal move than changing microphone, by a wide margin.
What Recording Cannot Fix
Equalisation can adjust the balance a guitar presents, but it cannot supply content the instrument did not produce. Boosting eighty hertz on a parlour guitar raises noise and room, because the instrument put very little there.
Equally, removing the low end from a dreadnought to make it sit in a dense mix does not turn it into an orchestra model. The midrange character and the way the instrument responds to the player remain those of a large guitar.
So the choice of instrument is a boundary condition on the recording. Working within it produces better results than fighting it, and recognising that early saves a great deal of time later.
