Loudness Practice Removes the Subject
In most contemporary recorded music, dynamic range is compressed deliberately and heavily. The reasoning is sound in that context: consistent level suits distracted listening, small speakers and noisy environments.
Acoustic music is frequently doing something that this process destroys. In a great deal of classical and jazz repertoire, the movement between quiet and loud is not a side effect of performance but the primary expressive material.
Applying pop mastering practice to that material does not make it more accessible. It removes the content, in the same way that flattening the contrast in a photograph removes the image rather than clarifying it.
What the Range Actually Is
The numbers make the scale of the problem clear. A symphony orchestra moving from a genuine pianissimo to a full tutti covers a range far wider than most reproduction chains and far wider than heavily compressed popular music, which often occupies a narrow band by design.
Reducing that to a pop-style range requires enormous gain reduction, and the reduction is not evenly applied. It acts most on exactly the passages the composer marked as climactic, because those are the passages that trigger it.
The result is a recording where the loud sections are no longer loud relative to the quiet ones. The architecture of the piece, which is largely built from that contrast, stops functioning.

Quiet Playing Is Not Just Quieter
There is a further problem that level-matching cannot address. A violinist playing quietly is not producing the same sound at a lower volume; they are producing a different sound, with less bow pressure, a different harmonic profile and a different attack.
Compression raises the level of that passage without changing its timbre, so the listener hears a quiet-sounding tone at a loud level. The cue is contradictory, and it reads as artificial even to listeners who cannot identify why.
This is why compressed classical recordings often sound flat rather than merely loud. The dynamic information has been removed from the level while remaining present in the timbre, and the two no longer agree.
Streaming Normalisation Changed the Calculation
For years the argument for compressing everything was competitive: a quieter track sounded weaker next to a louder one in a playlist. Loudness normalisation on the major streaming services has substantially undermined that.
Platforms now adjust playback so that tracks arrive at broadly comparable perceived loudness. A heavily compressed master is turned down to match, which means it no longer wins on volume and has simply given up its dynamic range for nothing.
For acoustic material this is straightforwardly good news. Preserving range no longer carries the competitive penalty it once did, and the recordings that keep it are not disadvantaged in the way they would have been a decade ago.

Some Control Is Still Necessary
None of this argues for no processing at all. A recording with completely unmanaged range is difficult to listen to in a car, on headphones on a train, or anywhere with a noise floor above a concert hall’s.
The distinction is between gentle, musically-placed level management and aggressive automatic reduction. Riding a fader slowly across a movement, or applying small amounts of gain in specific passages, preserves the relationships while making the recording usable.
That work is editorial rather than technical. It requires knowing the piece and deciding what must be preserved, which is why it is usually done by someone who has followed a score rather than by a plug-in responding to energy.
Trusting the Listener
Underneath the technical argument is a question about the audience. Heavy compression assumes a listener who will not adjust the volume, will not concentrate, and needs everything delivered at a constant level.
For a great deal of music that assumption is reasonable. For acoustic recording it usually is not, because the people seeking out a chamber recording or a solo piano album have already chosen to listen attentively.
Producing those records as though the audience were distracted serves nobody. It fails the attentive listener without gaining the inattentive one, which is the worst available outcome and an entirely avoidable one.
