A large instrument producing low frequencies in a small room is the hardest thing to capture in jazz.
The upright bass is the instrument most likely to be disappointing on a jazz recording, and the reasons are physical rather than a matter of skill.

Large Instrument, Long Wavelengths, Small Room
The double bass presents a combination of physical problems that no other instrument in a jazz ensemble does, and the difficulty is genuinely acoustic rather than a shortfall in technique or equipment.
Its lowest notes have wavelengths measured in metres. A low E is around forty-one hertz, which corresponds to a wavelength of roughly eight metres, considerably longer than most rooms people record in.
When a wavelength approaches or exceeds a room dimension, the sound stops behaving like a travelling wave you can point a microphone at and starts behaving like a pressure pattern filling the space, with locations where the note is loud and locations where it nearly disappears.
Room Modes Decide What You Capture
Those pressure patterns are room modes, and they are the main reason the same bass sounds fine in one corner and hollow two metres away. Each mode has positions of maximum and minimum pressure fixed by the room’s dimensions.
The practical consequence is that a microphone placed without regard to this records a bass whose note-to-note evenness is a property of the room, not the player. One note booms, the next vanishes, and no amount of equalisation repairs it because the problem differs per pitch.
Corners are pressure maxima for every mode simultaneously, which is why a bass in a corner sounds enormous and undefined. Positions away from walls and asymmetric within the room generally produce more even response.
Bass position is frequently more important than microphone choice, and the practical method is straightforward: move the instrument around the room while someone plays a scale, and listen for where the notes are most even.

The Instrument Radiates From Several Places
Unlike a guitar, the double bass has no single dominant output point. Sound comes from the f-holes, from the whole front and back plates, and from the bridge region where the strings drive the body.
Close-miking any one of these captures a partial instrument. At the f-hole you get body and boom with limited definition. Over the bridge you get attack and string detail with thin low end. Neither on its own resembles what a listener hears standing in front of the instrument.
This is why bass recording so often ends up as a combination: something close for definition, something further back for the actual body of the sound, with the balance between them doing the work that a single position cannot.
Pickups Solve One Problem and Create Another
Many bassists use a piezo pickup, and in a live jazz context with leakage everywhere, taking a direct signal is an obvious move. It gives isolation, immunity from room modes, and a strong clear attack.
What it does not give is the instrument’s sound. A piezo responds to bridge vibration, not to the radiated acoustic output, and the result is characteristically bright, tight and slightly plastic. Used alone it rarely convinces on a jazz record.
The standard resolution is to blend, using the pickup for definition and pitch clarity and a microphone for body and air. The two need time alignment, since the pickup signal arrives essentially instantaneously and the microphone does not.
Bridge pickups and microphones also need polarity checked against each other. A blend that sounds thin rather than fuller usually indicates the two are out of phase, and inverting one is the entire fix.

Compression Fights Physics and Loses
Because bass notes vary so much in level from note to note, the instinct is to compress heavily, which produces its own failure mode. Compressors respond to energy, and low frequencies carry most of the energy, so a compressor on bass is mainly reacting to whichever note happened to excite the room.
That means the gain reduction follows the room’s mode pattern rather than the player’s dynamics, and the result is a bass that pumps unmusically while still sounding uneven.
Gentler ratios, slower attacks and a filtered detector circuit all help, but the honest answer is that most double bass evenness problems are placement problems, and compression applied to a placement problem makes it more audible rather than less.
Getting It Right Happens Before Recording
Everything above points in the same direction. The bass is the instrument where decisions made in the room determine the outcome, and where post-production has the least ability to recover a poor capture.
The productive sequence is to move the instrument first, listening in the room, then place microphones, then consider a pickup blend, and only then think about processing. Reversing that order is the standard route to a disappointing result.
It takes longer than setting up any other instrument in the trio, and on a well-run session it is where the time goes. That allocation is not indulgence; it reflects where the difficulty actually is.
Arco playing is a separate problem from pizzicato and often needs a different position. Bowed bass sustains and excites the room far more, so a placement that works for walking lines may be unusable for arco passages.
