How Celtic Piano Gets Captured: Elderane's Miradas al Norte Looks From Madrid to Skye
Carlos Álvarez Points His Neoclassical Piano North, From the Island of Ons to Skye
The piano sits at the centre of Miradas al Norte, and its eleven track titles keep pointing north. Elderane is the instrumental project of Madrid-based composer Carlos Álvarez. The album came out on 11 September 2026, and it folds Celtic folk into neoclassical piano writing.
Elderane’s En lo Alto de la Colina, from Miradas al Norte, sits in the playlist below among this desk’s modern classical and neoclassical selections, and the project’s full coverage is collected on the Elderane profile. The album came to AcousticMusic.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks. Give it a listen as you keep reading about how the album was built.

Miradas al Norte Asks How Much of a Celtic Tune Survives When a Neoclassical Piano Leads It
That combination has a long history, and it suits an instrument with a long, even decay. A piano cannot bend a note the way a fiddle or a pipe can. Instead, it carries a folk melody through phrasing and space, letting each chord ring before the next one arrives. That is the craft question this record asks.
Álvarez describes Elderane as a project that draws on everything from his classical training to rock. The piano acts as the conducting element. On his Bandcamp page, he describes the aim as music that can tell stories without words. Miradas al Norte, his fifth album, applies that idea to the Celtic north.

Eleven Instrumental Titles Tell a Story Without Words, From a Galician Island to the Isle of Skye
With no lyrics to follow, the titles do the work a lyric sheet would usually do. In order, they sketch a route. First comes En lo Alto de la Colina (on top of the hill). Then Si la Nieve Resbala (if the snow slides), Danza del Viento (dance of the wind) and Gorriones (sparrows) follow. So the weather and the wildlife come first.
Then the route itself appears. Un Viaje al Norte names the trip, while Recuerdos del Sur looks back at the south it left behind. Next comes El Pub, the shortest full-length piece at just over two minutes. Its title nods to the place where so much Celtic music still lives. Tierra de Leyendas (land of legends) follows. At five minutes and one second, it is the longest piece on the record.
The last two titles name real places on the Atlantic edge of Europe. Ons is an island off the coast of Galicia. That corner of north-west Spain has a strong Celtic music tradition. The album then ends in Scotland with the Skye Boat Song. The much-loved song tells of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s crossing to the Isle of Skye. In other words, the record travels from Spain’s own Celtic coast to a classic Scottish tune.
That framing gives Miradas al Norte a clear shape. After all, the title translates as glances to the north. Every section of the album keeps that compass in view.

A 28-Second Prelude, a Five-Minute Centrepiece and a Closing Skye Boat Song Shape Miradas al Norte
Álvarez plans the structure with care. Ensoñación (daydream) opens the album at just 28 seconds. This short prelude sets the tone before the first full piece. After that, nine of the remaining ten tracks sit between two and four minutes, which keeps each idea compact. Only Tierra de Leyendas stretches out, and it sits ninth, late enough to feel like a destination.
Closing on the Skye Boat Song is also a structural choice. Ten pieces lead to a melody that many listeners will recognise, so the album ends on common ground. The digital credits name Carlos Álvarez Rodríguez as composer.
A Catalogue Built Release by Release Since 2019
The catalogue behind it is steady. Primeros Pasos arrived in April 2019. That June, the online radio show Aural Awakenings on Auralscapes played Crisálida from it. The same episode also featured Secret Garden. Raíces followed in April 2021, then the single Dos Hermanos that December. Later, Sueños y Leyendas came out in September 2022, followed by the Canciones para un Tiempo Especial EP that December. Negro Sobre Blanco arrived in October 2023. Finally, the singles Otros Caminos (2024) and Musa (2025) led into Miradas al Norte.
Three Reference Points for Listeners Coming New to Miradas al Norte
For listeners new to Elderane, three names help. Many listeners know Phil Coulter for Irish airs arranged for piano. Coulter’s Tranquility albums of the 1980s showed how far a quiet keyboard could carry a folk melody. Secret Garden, the Norwegian and Irish duo of Rolf Løvland and Fionnuala Sherry, set Celtic violin against piano. They won Eurovision in 1995 with Nocturne, a largely instrumental piece. Meanwhile, Ludovico Einaudi shows the neoclassical side, with short, repeating piano figures. Those figures leave room around each note.
Miradas al Norte sits between those three. It shares the folk melodies of the first two and the clean, patient piano writing of the third. Listeners who enjoy neoclassical, new age and Celtic piano will find a lot here.
AcousticMusic.News’s curator team: “There is a patience in Miradas al Norte that suits the north it points to. Elderane lets each title set a scene and then trusts the piano to hold it. That is why the album works best in one sitting, in order, with the Skye Boat Song as the last word.”
